Having a glass of red wine every now and again is thought to come with health benefits - what is less accepted is that this rule applies to pregnant women.

It looks like drinking during pregnancy will be opened up to fresh debate after new research suggests that drinking wine can also be beneficial to expectant mums.

According to researchers in Denmark, having as many as two glasses of wine a week is acceptable. Evidence also suggests that drinking wine during pregnancy can help produce happier and more well-adjusted kids.

Carried out by psychologist Janni Niclasen, the study examined mothers in Denmark who consumed 10 bottles of white wine during the course of their pregnancy.

While many would think this would have damaging effects of an unborn child, the results showed quite the opposite.

They found that children born from women who drank wine during pregnancy were behaviourally and emotionally better adjusted than those born of women who didn’t.

It should be noted that the majority of pregnant women who drank lightly were from a well-educated background and followed a healthy lifestyle, so the alcohol they had every week had no damaging effects on their overall health or on that of their unborn child.
