An investigation has been launched this week by the National Maternity Hospital, in Dublin, following the death of a 34-year-old pregnant woman during surgery.

According to RTÉ News, Malak Kuzbary Thawley was undergoing the emergency surgery for an ectopic pregnancy in May, when she suffered a vascular injury and died.

Mrs Thawley - who was originally from Syria, but had been living here with her American husband for three years - was seven weeks pregnant with her first child.

RTÉ reports that Mrs Thawley was advised to urgently attend Holles Street Hospital on May 8th, after a scan at a private clinic. The ectopic pregnancy was confirmed at the hospital, and she was admitted for surgery on the same day. Sadly, she passed away shortly after.

After confirming that an internal investigation will be carried out into the incident, the National Maternity Hospital told the national broadcaster: "Every maternal death is a deeply tragic event and, as always, our thoughts are with the loved ones of the deceased.”

We are thinking of Mrs Thawley’s husband, Alan, and their family at this time.
