Pregnancy is a huge thing to happen to your body, and not surprisingly, you will be completely and utterly exhausted, and fatigue is one of those pregnancy symptoms that we could all do without. Trying to go about your daily tasks, mind other children and go to work can be hard when all you want to do is crawl into a ball and fall asleep.

Unfortunately, you can’t simply put life on hold while you try to sleep your way through the first trimester, so here are some handy tips to help you get through the exhausting first trimester

1. Eat a healthy diet

It is important you eat a healthy diet in order to keep your energy levels up and your blood sugar levels even. Things like fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meat like chicken and fish, whole-grains and nuts are ideal. Skip the caffeine to get over your energy slump and instead opt for water.

2. Go to bed an hour earlier

Easier said than done we know, but you should try to head to bed an hour earlier. Leave the dishes until tomorrow and put the phone down. Even if you can’t sleep - sometimes it’s just your body that is feeling tired - pick up a book.

3. Take a nap when you can

A ten or 15 minute nap is better than nothing so try to squeeze one into your daily routine if you can. If possible, rope in some extra hands from family and friends for the first few weeks at least so you can actually sit down and take a nap.

4. Cut down on your activities

You don’t need to give up your pre-pregnancy life but, if you can, try to cut back on the amount of activities you do during the week. A busy schedule is not going to help you deal with exhaustion so cut down on what you can for now at least. You usually feel a lot more energised in the second trimester so you can pick back up once you are feeling a little better.

5. Exercise when you can

While getting up off the couch in the evenings is the last thing you’ll want to do, it is important you do some gentle exercises like walking or a slow jog – you’ll sleep better and feel more energised.
