Congratulations, you are now a mum!

However, contrary to what celebrities have led us to believe, your body does not just bounce back to how it was before you gave birth, and we're not just taking about appearance.

Growing a baby for nine months is pretty huge achievement, and your body will certainly be put through the ringer... and you will more than likely experience some or even all of the following post-pregnancy symptoms.

1. Urinary incontinence

Can affect a huge number of new mums, so it is important you do your Kegel exercises during pregnancy and to continue after.

2. Post-partum bleeding

The bleeding can last for up to six weeks after you give birth but you won’t be able to use tampons in case of infection, so invest in large sanitary pads.

3. Haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids are swollen veins located at the anus – you can thank all that pushing during labour for them. Ease any discomfort by sitting on a doughnut pillow, having a warm bath and talking to your pharmacist about the best topical ointment available.

4. Stomach cramps

Your uterus is trying to reduce down in size and it is painful – think period cramps with a little more bite.

5. Constipation

The first time you go to do your number twos can be terrifying, but don’t expect it to happen straight away as your bowel movements will be pretty slow to get back to normal after birth.

6. Sweating

It is common after pregnancy to experience night sweats or just general sweating as your hormones flush all that extra pregnancy fluid out of your body. Stay hydrated and wear lose fitting clothing to relieve any discomfort. Talk to your doctor if it doesn’t seem to be settling down or you think it may be caused by an infection.
