We think we know everything there is to know about pregnancy, but everyday we learn something new.

Here are ten weird and wonderful things about expecting that you probably never knew about:

The baby can taste strong flavours in the womb

Strong flavours can actually pass through the amniotic fluid giving your baby a taste of what’s to come.

The amniotic fluid has more than one job

The fluid that surrounds your baby helps keep them warm, acts as a shock absorber, lets baby move around and stops body parts growing together.

Your uterus will expand to over 500 times its size

Don't worry, this will happen over the course of your entire pregnancy, not all a once.

It is scientifically proven that nipple stimulation can bring on labour

So be careful, ladies...

The longest pregnancy every recorded was one year and ten days

The unusually long pregnancy occurred in 1945 and was carried by 25-year-old Beulah Hunter who was expecting for 375 days - that's 95 days longer than normal. Bet you thought nine months was a long time.

Babies cry in the womb

While they are probably not crying because they are sad, scientists have said that unborn babies can actually shed a few tears in the womb.

Your heart grows bigger

Your heart will grow in size to help with the increased blood flow. See, a baby does make your heart grow.

A full bladder can cause Braxton Hicks contractions

Yes, a full bladder can make you feel like you are going into labour,  so remember to relieve yourself often.

You are more likely to have twins if you are tall

It definitely doesn’t mean that all tall people are going to have twins but it makes the chances more likely - although genetics and being over 35 are also contributing factors.

You only need about 300 extra calories a day

While this depends on your pre-pregnancy  weight or what your doctor feels is right for you, generally speaking, women only need an extra 300 calories a day. So no eating for two anymore!
