Calls for the regulation of portion sizes

A new study by the British Heart Foundation has found supermarket portion sizes in the UK have doubled in the last two decades.
 
While some products such as cheddar cheese have remained the same. a significant number of products have increased.
 
An average chicken curry and rice ready meal is now 53% larger than in 1993, while a frozen meat lasagne has increased by 39%.
 
A study of baked goods found that sliced bread still provided a portion of 36g, but crumpets are now 20-30% bigger and a bagel has increased in size by 24%.
 
While single portion bags of crisps have remained consistent, family bags were found to have increased by 50%.
 
The research also found that consumers had a poor understanding of portion sizes when serving themselves at home, with the average person pouring nearly 50% more cornflakes than the recommended portion.
