Just when you think nothing else can shock you …

There’s always a lot of hulla-balloo about prepping for a wedding. I was part of it. And I admit to succumbing to the need to diet to fit into that dress.  I didn’t use any specific diet plan, but I did watch what I was eating, and I upped my exercise regime. It was partly successful … I did fit into the dress – but there was a LOT of spanx-like assistance! And that’s ok with me. Would I have liked to be a few pounds lighter? Sure. Was I happy to lose my marbles over it? No. But apparently, some women are.

The latest diet craze that I’ve read about sees women having a ‘feeding-tube’ inserted into their nose in order to shed the lbs!!!! Shocking. There’s just no good reason to do this. There really isn’t. But some ladies don’t agree, and have this tube inserted in their nose so that it can provide a liquid diet of a limited calorific value directly into their stomach. It costs approximately €1,200 to have the tube inserted for 10 days so you can be fed just the right amount of nourishment without the carbs. Basically you’re on a diet of approx. 800 calories a day – which is effectively a crash diet. And of course with any kind of crash diet you get side effects – with this one you can expect some fun things such as constipation, bad breath and dizziness. There’s also rumoured issues with kidney stones, dehydration, headaches and loss of muscle mass. It’s not exactly sugar coating it for me to be honest.

I can’t quite decide if getting a tube inserted in order to lose weight is more sinister or sad. I just think we could do without yet another quick fix diet.  To be honest, aside from the health issues and side effects – how dumb are you going to look walking around with a feeding tube up your nose?  Picture it … dinner out with friends  or picking the kids up from school or Sunday lunch in nana’s house …
