Large expenses mean working mums can’t spend as much time with children

A new study showed that large expenses are stopping the majority of working mums from leaving their professional job to become stay-at-home mums.

The government survey showed that more than half of working mums would cut their hours if it was possible and nearly a third would give up their jobs completely.

However, because they need to pay bills and provide their family with financial support, they have to keep working.

The research for the Department for Education found that the mothers who are the most eager to leave their job to mind their little ones are the ones in higher professions.

Over two-thirds of mums in senior and middle-management roles admit they’d spend fewer hours in the office if they could afford it.

A survey by Childcare and Early Years said: “Mothers in higher socio-economic groups were more likely to prefer to work fewer hours if they could afford it in order to spend more time looking after their children, and less likely to prefer to work more hours if they could arrange good quality childcare.”

The survey suggested that better-paid mums are far more anxious about spending time at home, compared with women at lower levels.

But critics are saying that since stay-at-home mums don’t get enough support, women have no choice but to work hard to put food on the table.
