I now feel like a regular at Lidl.  I have been going to my two local branches for the last three weeks and am enjoying the experience and particularly, the savings.  I love the bakery and the fresh fruit and veg sections, so this week I decided to explore some more of the meat and fish on offer.  I got two rib eye steaks for the BBQ for €7.99.  They were really tasty and tender.  I am a big fan of steak and these got the double thumbs up from me.  There is also a deluxe steak range (fillet, rib eye, sirloin, striploin) priced between €11 - €13 which looked superb and I will definitely be trying these next week.

Lidl had some great offers for the BBQ this week, including garlic and herb chicken skewers for €2.79.  These were a great hit, especially with the kids who were calling them chicken lolly pops.  I picked up a large pack of fresh chicken drumsticks for €2.89 which were perfect on the BBQ drizzled with some sweet chilli sauce.

To wash all this lovely BBQ fare down, I discovered that Lidl stock craft beer.  Along with the steaks, this got my better half’s attention!  They have an Irish red ale by The Crafty Brewing Co. which he tells me is really tasty and just €1.89 for a 500ml bottle.

Mary Berry was on TV during the week cooking a fish pie so I decided to give this a go.  I used the Lidl Inismara seafood mix for this as it contains fresh and smoked fish along with salmon.  It was gorgeous.  Because the fish was already skinned, de-boned and cut into cubes, it couldn’t have been simpler and it cost just €2.79 for 250g.

This is now a firm family favourite and I love that the kids will eat it, it’s healthy, affordable and easy to make.  Everything I needed for this dish was sourced in Lidl.  I added a few sneaky prawns – Lidl stock both fresh and frozen prawns, so it was a bit of affordable decadence!

Speaking of decadence, my indulgent treat this week was a pack of Gelatelli mini mint ice-creams.  These little beauties are absolutely divine!  If you haven’t tried them and you like after eight ice-cream, you need to get your hands on these – a pack of 8 is less than €3!  And as they are fun size, they’re guilt free.

My two bargains of the week were:
  • Biscuits (digestives, ginger nut and rich tea) each cost less than 50c - yes!
  • And “Primadonna” extra virgin olive oil, which is really lovely, costs just €3.29 for a 750ml bottle.  Perfect for salad dressing and cooking.
Before hitting the checkout, I couldn’t resist some of the Euros football gear for the kids!  There was a fun range of t-shirts, flags, banners, hats, you name it, to get into the spirit of things for Ireland’s first match against Sweden.  My trolley was full to the brim this week and cost me €110.  This would certainly have cost around the €200 mark in other supermarkets.
