Week 1

So off we trotted to our local Lidl store in Bray armed with our shopping list and our hyper children. First thing I noticed that the store wasn’t too busy given it was a Sunday afternoon. We got a parking space right outside the entrance and there was no problem getting a trolley.

Having never really shopped in Lidl before it took just a little longer to identify some items as we are used to buying mainstream brands but I was pleasantly surprised to find everything I needed and also that they also had some mainstream items as well.

I was impressed with the overall selection of foods and the significant savings we made on our cereals and dried goods. The Lidl Multi-grain Hoops came in at €1.49 and the Malt Wheaties were €1.19 which have been a huge hit for my cereal loving son (these can usually costs anything from €3 up per box).  The fresh fruit and veg for the most part were cheaper than our usual supermarket with only a couple of items that would be the same as we would normally pay. I got some lean mince which was €3.79 where I would normally pay €4.99. They had an excellent selection of fresh meats and poultry and I will be making spaghetti bolognese later in the week.

We picked up a nice Irish Round Roast Beef Joint and had this for a Sunday dinner along with roasted baby potatoes, roasted parsnip, carrots and fine beans. I also picked up a nice bottle of white wine to accompany the dinner for €5.49 – what a bargain.

I reckon the equivalent shop would have cost us over €130 in our usual supermarket compared to under €100 in Lidl.

Given I had the kids with me I wasn’t able to peruse the Weekly Special Offer aisle this week but plan to leave the kiddies behind next week so I can have a proper look.

Finally I was impressed with the girl on the checkout as she spotted that one of the oranges in the bag we had picked up had been damaged and got it replaced.
