Potty Training

Hey everyone
I have a son who will be 3 in july, i have got him a potty to start toilet training but he hates being without a nappy i put little pants on him and he told me he didnt like them, i am just slightly concerned as alot of children in his age group are already trained and I feel like he is very dependant on the nappy. He has never liked running around without one on even, has anyone any suggestions on what to do ?
he does get very upset with out the nappy on and it breaks my heart to see him cry so much to put it back on
