Mothers are amazing; they do so much for the ones they love, and they deserve to be praised to the high heavens each and every day. The unconditional love of a mum has really been summed up this week, however, by the story of American woman Cara Combs.

Cara’s story has made headlines around the world, after she postponed her cancer treatment in order to save her unborn child’s life. She sadly passed away this week.

A mother-of-three, Cara was 23 weeks pregnant with her fourth child when she was diagnosed with stage four melanoma.

While doctors advised her to have her baby immediately so that she could start treatment as soon as possible, they informed her that waiting until 28 weeks to deliver would increase the child’s survival chances by 90%.  In a courageous act, Cara decided to wait until the 28-week mark to have her daughter, and then begin her treatment.

I feel it's time to post this because I know a lot of information is going around. Last week I was diagnosed with stage...

Throughout her journey, Cara documented each step on her Facebook page, and she wrote back in November: “The plan is to deliver the baby on December 7, at 28 weeks. We are still unsure of which treatment I will undergo and are looking into travelling to Texas for the most advanced treatment there is.”

Just a day before giving birth, Cara organised for professional photographer Emily Lucarz to take some beautiful family photos with husband Roy and their three children. It was Emily who, the very next day, revealed that Cara had gone into labour and welcomed a daughter, Shaylin, via emergency C-section.

After posting stunning photos of baby Shaylin with her siblings, on the morning of December 8, Emily broke the tragic news that Cara had passed away.

Paying tribute to the amazing mother, Emily wrote: “Cara was an amazing wife, mother, daughter and sister. She sacrificed everything so her new little one could live on. She was a truly amazing person and mother.”

Updating followers of their GoFundMe page (link here), husband Roy added: “She was the strongest person I ever met and the best wife and mother. She sacrificed everything so her legacy could live on. Thank you all for your support and prayers. She was my everything, and always will be.”

Baby Shaylin is said to be doing well in intensive care.

Our hearts go out to the family after their tragic ordeal.
