At the time that it made headlines around the world, reactions ranged from puzzled to amused, but it seems that we should be approaching the latest pregnancy gadget with caution.

Just days after a Spanish organisation unveiled the Babypod, a ‘musical tampon’ inserted to allow babies listen to music from the womb, a medical expert has warned against its use.

Dr Natalie Azar spoke out against the Babypod during an interview with Today.com this week, admitting that she is wary of the safety of the gadget for both mother and child.

Addressing the scientific trials behind the Babypod, Dr Azar said: “I can’t imagine that an obstetrician would be okay with this, number one – and number two, the science behind it sounds a bit loosey-goosey to me.”

She explained that there is always a risk associated with “introducing something foreign” to the body during pregnancy, and added: “Doctors limit the amount of manual exams they give pregnant women, even. We all know the vagina has its own way of keeping clean and everything, and this seems like an unnecessary risk.”

She went on to advise parents to introduce their kids to music in the traditional way – after they are born.
