We hear so many awful stories of child abuse and neglect on a weekly basis, that hearing experts criticising parental affection towards kids is bound to be a divisive topic.

However, an author is claiming just that this week, suggesting that a parent kissing their child on the lips could be “too sexual”.

Dr Charlotte Reznick, author of The Power of Your Child’s Imagination: How to Transform Stress and Anxiety Into Joy and Success, made the controversial comments this week.

“The kiss on the lips can be stimulating…It’s just too confusing. It Mommy kisses Daddy on the mouth and vice versa, what does that mean when I – a little girl or boy – kiss my parents on the mouth? If I had to answer when to stop kissing your kids on the lips, it would be now,” she said.

In further explanation of her reasoning, Dr Reznick added that kissing kids on the lips is “confusing” because the mouth is an ‘erogenous zone’.

While many parents have hit back at Dr Reznick’s claims on social media, a number of experts in the field have also rejected her claims.

Clinical psychologist Sally-Anne McCormack rubbished the statement, saying: “There’s absolutely no way that kissing a young child on the lips is confusing for them in any way. That’s like saying breastfeeding is confusing. Some people might have issues with it, but it isn’t any more sexual than giving a baby a back rub.”

Among the responses on Twitter were the following, from a mum, who wrote: “Not sure about the ‘expert’ here. I personally don’t see kissing my son on the lips as sexual in the slightest.”
