A Delta Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Atlanta was forced to make an unexpected stop when a woman on board went into labour.

The woman was 37 weeks pregnant, and shortly into the flight began to feel contractions.

The plane was forced to make an unscheduled stop at Shannon Airport, where she was rushed to the University Maternity Hospital in Limerick.

Her contractions were just one minute apart by the time the plane landed, and there were fears she would give birth before flight landed.

Mum and baby are said to be doing well. The flight resumed it’s journey to the United States after and hour and a half.

Most airlines are nervous about heavily pregnant women flying, and insist on a doctor’s note if a woman is travelling within four weeks of her due date.

Delta Airlines however do not require this, stating on their website that the airline "does not impose restrictions on flying for pregnant women, so a medical certificate is not required to travel."

They do however recommend that it’s a “good idea to check with your doctor to be sure travel is not restricted.”

We wouldn’t blame them if they started being a bit more strict after this.
