Speaking on Morning Ireland today, former Tánaiste, Eamon Gilmore, has asserted that same-sex marriage will have no implications on children or opposite-sex couples and slammed the 'No' side for using children as 'weapons' in their campaign.

The politician spoke out about the issue, having once dubbed it 'the civil rights issue of our generation' and explained that the referendum will not redefine marriage, but simple extend the definition.

Making his feelings on the issue clear, Mr. Gilmore insisted: "It’s essentially about equality. It’s essentially about saying to people that the love of a same-sex couple is no less valid that the love of any other couple."

Offering his opinion on the issue which is raising much debate in recent months, the former Tánaiste asserted that the upcoming referendum was necessary because any legislation which may be introduced on same-sex marriage could be deemed unconstitutional.

With voting taking place in less than two weeks, people on both sides of the debate, including our nation's children, are making sure their voices are heard in the lead-up to May 22nd.
