The Gardaí and AA Ireland have issued a stark warning to female drivers across the country today, urging them to be vigilant when driving alone on secluded roads.

According to a report in the Irish Independent, the police and road authorities’ warning follows a spate of incidents whereby lone female drivers have been victims of roadside high-jackings.

They have asked that women take extra care when travelling alone, particularly if – for any reason – they are forced to stop their vehicle in a secluded area.

In one reported incident, a woman in her forties was assaulted after stopping her car on a country road between Tramore and Waterford City. When an object struck her car, the woman cut the engine to see what had happened – it was then that a man with an ‘Eastern European accent’ pinned her down to her bonnet, injuring her head, and stole personal belongings before running away.

A similar incident took place in Cork, and authorities have expressed concern over how common these shocking high-jackings have become in recent times.

Urging drivers to be careful, an AA representative advised people – if they find themselves having to stop their car in an isolated area – to stay calm and lock their doors.

Conor Faughnan of AA Ireland said: "There is a nasty trend emerging here, and the best advice that we can give is to keep your doors locked at all times.”
