With the cold mornings very much still with us, it’s a common sight to see your car iced over as you leave the house, whether you're rushing to work, hitting the school run or going out in the evenings.

But however tempting it may be to leave your car running to get it de-iced as you go to lock up or get the kids safely into it, Gardai have issued a word of caution on social media and advised against this, as they report a number of cars have been stolen in this way around Dublin, Kildare and Meath recently. They also say that your car insurance may be affected if your vehicle is reported stolen in this manner.

“Gardaí are advising carowners not to leave their engines running as they de-ice their vehicles & leave the vehicle unattended. A number of cars have been stolen in this way including Dublin /Kildare & Meath areas. Insurance cover could be effected!” An Garda Siochana said via Twitter this afternoon.

Invest in some de-icer fluid or make sure you’re sitting in your car as it defrosts to prevent anyone even attempting to steal your car.

Better to be safe than sorry mums!
