How can I give myself a manicure and pedicure at home?

There is nothing better than the feeling of freshly manicured nails. However, as we are all aware, a visit to the nail salon can come with a hefty price tag. So why not try the MummyPages at home mani and pedi for pampered hands and feet at a fraction of the cost?

Manicure
  • Remove any nail varnish from the nail, then cut and file nails into your desired shape.
  • Soak nails in a bowl of warm water with a dash of lemon juice to remove any staining caused by coloured varnish, smoking or cooking.
  • Remove hands from the water and gently push back your cuticles. These can be carefully trimmed using a cuticle clipper if you prefer.
  • Apply a cuticle cream to the surface of the nail, paying particular attention to the base. Allow the cream to absorb into the nail. MummyPages loves Avon NAIL EXPERTS Cuticle Balm.
  • It is essential to remove any remaining oil or moisturiser from the nails before polishing them. Moisturising ingredients of any kind left on the nail, will prevent the nail varnish from sticking. Use nail polish remover for this step.
  • Choose the nail polish that you want to use. Apply it to the nails in layers allowing it to dry between coats. We recommend that you apply four coats of polish to the nail for a glossy appearance (base coat, two coats of colour, and a top coat). We recommend the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure collection.
  • Allow plenty of time for the polish to dry. Once you are happy, apply another layer of cuticle cream to the cuticle area. This will help encourage healthy nail growth and protect the cuticle.

Pedicure
  • Remove any nail varnish from the nail. Carefully cut toe nails, and file them into your desired shape. Be careful not to cut nails too short, doing so increases the chance of developing ingrown toenails.
  • Apply an exfoliating foot scrub and massage your feet and legs. MummyPages recommends The Body Shop Peppermint Soothing Foot Scrub. Use a flat pumice stone to buff away calluses on the bottoms of your feet. Rinse any remaining scrub off your feet and legs and dry thoroughly – not forgetting in between the toes!
  • Very gently, push the cuticle back away from the nail. Avoid pushing it too far as this can damage nail growth or fray the cuticles. Cuticles can be trimmed using a cuticle clipper if desired.
  • Remove any excess moisture on the nail bed using nail polish remover.
  • Choose the nail polish that you want to use. Apply it to the nails in layers allowing it to dry between coats. We recommend that you apply four coats of polish to the nail (base coat, two coats of colour, and a top coat) to achieve a glossy appearance. We recommend the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure collection.
  • Allow plenty of time for the polish to dry. Once you are happy, apply moisturiser to the feet.
