He was just 12-years-old when his mother, Princess Diana, was tragically killed in a car crash, and Prince Harry has said that he "buried" his emotions following her death in 1997.

The 32-year-old opened up after the death of his mother in a new documentary, Prince Harry in Africa, admitting that he struggled to deal with her loss.

“I’d never really dealt with what had actually happened so there was a lot of buried emotion and, for a huge part of my life, I just didn’t even want to think about it,” he said in the ITV documentary.

The documentary marks the 10th anniversary of Sentebale, a charity which helps children who have HIV and AIDS, and was set up by Harry in Diana's honour.

And just like his mum, Harry has been heavily involved in charity work - something he admits helped him deal with his emotions.

In fact, as part of his 2004 gap year he spent time in Lesotho trying to find something that would make his mother, who was a well known AIDS activist, proud.

"I now view life very differently from what it used to be," he said.

"I used to bury my head in the sand, and let everything around you tear you to pieces."

Continuing he added: "I was fighting the system, going, 'I don't want to be this person’. My mother died when I was very, very young and I don't want to be in the position."
