Today begins the inquest into the death of 34-year-old Malak Thawley who passed away at the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street in Dublin in May.

Mrs Thawley - who was originally from Syria, but had been living here with her American husband for three years - was seven weeks pregnant with her first child.

RTÉ reports that Mrs Thawley was advised to urgently attend Holles Street Hospital on May 8th, after a scan at a private clinic. The ectopic pregnancy was confirmed at the hospital, and she was admitted for surgery on the same day. Sadly, she passed away shortly after.

Dublin District Coroner’s Court will hear the details of the young woman’s tragic passing today from the postmortem examination.

After confirming that an internal investigation will be carried out into the incident, the National Maternity Hospital told the national broadcaster: "Every maternal death is a deeply tragic event and, as always, our thoughts are with the loved ones of the deceased.”
