As the ASTI conference in Killarney drew to a close today, there was no doubt that members were unhappy about certain policies.

Calling for a change in pregnancy-related sick leave, members expressed unhappiness at a rule which stipulated women who develop a pregnancy-related illness will be required to factor that time off into their sick leave entitlements.

Commenting on the changes which were brought into effect in September of last year, one teacher who has suffered two miscarriages, said: "If I'm lucky enough to get pregnant again chances are I will be put on bed rest, but I am worried about sick leave which is putting more pressure on me."

Admitting that the new policy plays a role in her future plans, the teacher from south Dublin went on to say: "I'd like to have at least one more child, but the lack of support in the system worries me."

Teachers expressed worry that their plans to extend their families will have financial implications if they suffer any ill-health throughout their pregnancy.

The notion that expectant women will be paid at half-pay should they miss work as a result of a pregnancy-related illness was met with negativity.
