Ever watched a football or rugby match and wondered why the players have tape all over their body? No, it’s not a new accessory - it is actually a special tape called Kinesio tape which helps with the treatment of muscular aches and pain.

By placing the tape along troublesome areas, the technique then provides support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting movement. While frequently spotted on the sports field, it could actually be beneficial to pregnant women suffering from muscle or joint pain, commonly experienced in the third trimester.

While a wonderful experience, pregnancy can definitely be uncomfortable and sometimes painful as your baby grows, so anything that offers some sort of relief is always welcomed.

However, when it comes to treating any sort of pain during pregnancy it is important you are well informed, so we asked MummyPages Expert Jenny Branigan from Total Physio, what she thought of using the tape.

What is Kinesio tape?

Kinesio tape is one of the treatment techniques commonly used with pregnant women to treat muscular aches and pains.

How does it work?

Musculoskeletal pain is common in pregnancy, especially low back and pelvic girdle pain, as well as round ligament pain (quick sharp pain felt in the lower abdomen or groin area). Kinesio tape is said to facilitate the body’s natural healing process by providing support and stability to muscles and joints, improving blood flow, reducing pain and swelling and controlling inflammation.

Are there any other benefits to it?

Yes. Kinesio taping is not just for the treatment of muscular pain, it is also quite effective in helping reduce postural pain in pregnant women and new mums.

If you are interested in using the tape for relieving pain, make sure you contact a physiotherapist or your GP who can advise you on your own personal circumstances.
