Whether we've heard it when expecting or offered it as words of advice to a pregnant friend of family member, the phrase 'eating for two' is often bandied about when discussing a pregnant woman's eating habits.

According to professionals in the field, however, this idea is nothing but a myth which should be dispelled at the earliest opportunity, with expectant women urged to properly assess their dietary plans in order to provide their unborn child with the required nutrients.

In order to educate women embarking on the exciting nine-month journey, researchers have established that an expectant woman needs only increase her calorie intake by 300 calories in order to properly nurture the foetus.

According to the Huffington Post however, this research contrasts slightly with NHS guidelines which recommend pregnant women increase their calorie content by just 200 calories, but only in the final three-month stage of the process.

The aforementioned research has been published in the Journal of Tropical Pediatrics and the American Pregnancy Association.
