A Scottish mum has hailed her daughter as a ‘warrior princess’ for defying the odds to thrive, after being born with some of her organs outside of her body.

Baby Sofia Cass was born on 4th October, eight weeks premature, after being diagnosed with gastroschisis.

Gastroschisis is a condition whereby a baby’s intestines are stuck to the outside of the body, through a hole next to the bellybutton.

Mum Suzanne Burt was rushed to hospital for an emergency C-section. Sofia arrived into the world shortly after, weighing just 4lbs, with her large intestine, small intestine and stomach outside of her body.

While Sofia was wrapped in cling film to keep her warm, some of her organs needed extra protection – and were placed in a plastic silo bag for two days.

The tot then underwent surgery, with her organs gradually placed back inside of her body. And, despite some setbacks, Sofia is now thriving at home with her family.

In an interview with the Daily Record, proud mum Suzanne said: “The hospital were amazing. And she came out with her silo bag to protect the rest until it went in and she could be stitched up.”

“When she came out of her closure surgery, being able to hold her was absolutely amazing. I will never forget that day,” she added.

We are delighted to hear that Sofia is doing so well.
