Facing into a battle with a terminal illness is a heartbreaking prospect for any parent, and one brave mum has made headlines this week with her plans to provide comfort to her young daughter.

Heather McManamy was 33 when she was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer two years ago; now, sadly, the cancer has metastasised in her bones and liver, giving her stage four cancer.

The now 35-year-old is mother to four-year-old daughter Brianna, and knowing that her loss is going devastate her family, she has planned an incredibly moving gesture to help them through after she is gone.

Heather has begun writing cards to her daughter, so that she can ‘be there’ for her in spirit, when she cannot be there physically.

“It’s heartbreaking to know that my family is going to be sad and go through a painful loss without me to comfort them. That is the hardest part of all this some days,” she told Yahoo Parenting.

Referring to the stash of cards she has created for Brianna, she added: “You name it, I’ve got a card for it. Some have a lot written inside, and some are just short and sweet. Like what I’d write if I were here.”

From birthdays to weddings and everything in between, Heather has made sure to prepare Brianna for every situation. She has so far written cards for up to and including Brianna’s 30th birthday.

Explaining the motivation behind her plan, Heather said: “I hope that she’ll feel my unconditional love for her and know that I’m still with her.”

What a heartbreaking story. Heather and her family are in our thoughts.
