Many of you will remember the story and plight of Roseann Brennan, who has been campaigning for reductions in speed limits in built-up areas. While she has made progress with her own campaign, it seems that she has inspired others to push for further change.

A Dublin City Councillor has made a proposal for communities to be allowed to close off their roads for a set amount of time in order to allow children to play on the street.

The proposal was put forward by Fianna Fáil’s Deirdre Heney, and would see communities applying to their local authority for permission.

Councillor Heney’s idea is now set to be trialled in the Donnycarney community.

Commenting on the inspiration behind the proposal, Councillor Heney said: “It’s about promoting a better quality of life in communities whereby people will be able to know who lives where on their street.”

“I think only a positive spin-off can come from something like this,” she added.

We look forward to seeing how the trial works out, and we will keep you updated on the story.
