Lack of housing and homelessness are two of the biggest issues weighing down on society in the Republic of Ireland today, and a new survey has given an insight into the fear going hand-in-hand with them.

Research conducted by the Simon Communities of Ireland has revealed that one in five Irish adults are worried about losing their own homes. Furthermore, a quarter of adults are worried about being able to afford to keep a roof over their heads.

These alarming findings were made by analysing the data of 2,000 people surveyed by the Simon Community, an organisation which provides support and emergency accommodation to prevent homelessness.

As you can imagine, the statistics released this morning have sent shockwaves throughout the country, and the Simon Community is hoping that it will help to put the issues of housing and homelessness at the top of the agenda ahead of the General Election.

Commenting on the statistics this morning, Simon Community representative Niamh Randall told local media that the charity was left “shocked at the extent of concern around these issues”.
