Lollipop man Nkosana Mdikane, who was known for his cheery demeanour and engaging attitude, has been banned from dancing and high-fiving children while on duty.

74-year-old Nkosana has been advised to 'remain static' so that he can act as 'a barrier between pupils and traffic' .

This decision on the part of the council has been met with criticism by parents who feel Nkosana is a welcome addition to the morning school run.

Explaining their decision, a spokesman for the council said: "All patrollers are instructed when crossing children over a road to remain static with one hand on their stick and the other stretched outwards. This ensures that they can be seen."

Nkosana, who was disappointed by the councils decision, is thrilled by the support he has received from parents who have created a Facebook group called ' Save the High Fives'.

Nkosana, who began working as a lollipop man in 2013, was recently praised by the council who said: "Nkosana is one of  nearly 60 school crossing patrollers in West Dunbartonshire who are valued members of the community and provide an excellent service in all weathers. It is great that he has been highlighted for his cheery nature."
