Knowing how to take of yourself properly becomes paramount for all mums-to-be as soon as they find out they are expecting.

However, while most of us know not to eat soft cheeses and to stay away from sick people, there are a few things that can worry us, sometimes unnecessarily.

While it is always advisable to talk to your GP or midwife if you are worried about anything at all, we have compiled a list of the six most common things expectant mothers tend to be concerned about.

1. Is it ok to get a manicure?

While the chemical smells can make you feel nauseous, one of the main risks when getting a manicure is developing an infection that can be passed to your baby. However, if the equipment is sterilised and your technician wears gloves there shouldn’t be a problem. And always make sure the room is well-ventilated.

2. Is it ok to dye my hair?

When you dye your hair a little of the product can penetrate your skin, but studies have found it isn’t harmful to your baby. However, the smell can make you feel sick and you should always consult your GP if you are concerned.

3. Is it safe to exercise?

Exercising during your pregnancy is encouraged as it has many benefits to both you and Baby. However, your balance will likely be a little off as your bump grows so you need to be extra careful when running or cycling in case of a fall.

4. Is it safe to be around animals?

It is generally safe to have your pet around when you are expecting but you should be extra careful that they don’t bite or kick you. If you have a cat it is advisable you get someone else clean out the litter tray or use gloves and a face mask in case of the risk of taxoplasmosis.

5. Is it ok to fly?

While commercial air travel is fine when you are expecting, do check with your health care provider before you board a plane. Most airlines will allow you to travel up to the 25th or even 32nd week, but they may request a doctor’s cert.

6. Is it ok to lift heavy items?

Lifting heavy items, like a child, is generally thought to be ok in the early stages, but as your bump grows you can feel a shift in balance and experience lower back pain. If you have any type of pregnancy complications your doctor may advise you from lifting anything – always listen to them.
