With private care you will see the same consultant for each of your antenatal visits and they will usually be the one delivers your child. If they are not available, they will arrange for another consultant to be there.

Ideally with Private Care you should have your own private room after the birth. This, however, cannot always be the case as hospitals are so short on space and so you may have to spend some time in a semi-private or public room.

There is only one private hospital offering maternity care in Ireland – Mount Carmel in Dublin – but public hospitals also offer private care. Private health insurance will usually cover the cost of the delivery and private accommodation in a public hospital. Some insurers will cover the costs of some consultant’s fees. These usually cost between €3,500 and €5,000 in Dublin and €2,500 and €4,000 in the rest of the country. You can get a shared care package from Mount Carmel for as little as €1,699 (this includes tax deductions and health insurance). For more information on Mount Carmel's new packages click here.

If you wish to stay in Mount Carmel Hospital, 3 nights stay will cost about €6,000 and consultant fees will cost between €3,200 and €3,800.
