When it comes to knowing what not to put into our body - like alcohol, soft cheeses or certain fish - when pregnant, we are all fairly clued up. However, it is easy to forget that what we put onto our skin can also have an effect on our growing baby. When expecting, it is important to have a look at your beauty regime and the products that you are using, as some can contain ingredients that aren’t suitable during pregnancy.

When shopping for products, be cautious about picking up anything with these ingredients:

Salicylic acid

Used to treat certain skin problems like acne, salicylic acid penetrates the pores to give them a deep clean and also helps to reduce inflammation. While small amounts once or twice a week is ok, allowing it to sit on your skin for long periods like with a face peel should be avoided until baby is born. Taking it orally can cause birth defects and the more product you use the more that will soak into your skin.

Retinoids

Found in anti-ageing products, this ingredient can help to speed up skin renewal and stop collagen breaking down. Retinoids are a type of Vitamin A and high doses of this vitamin can cause birth defects in your unborn baby. While using it as a topical ointment won’t have too much effect, it is best to use it sparingly until after the birth.

Accutane

Another ingredient used to treat acne, which should be using this during early pregnancy can have an impact on the baby’s development. Accutane is a man-made Vitamin A that is normally taken orally and even in small amount sit can be harmful to baby.

Always talk to your dermatologist or GP about any skincare products you are using if you are concerned in any way. And if starting a new treatment, make sure you let your healthcare provider know that you are pregnant.
