The father of Sherin Mathews, the toddler who went missing after being made to stand outside of her house in the early hours of the morning, has been arrested.

Wesley Mathews has been charged with first-degree felony injury to a child, after voluntarily presenting himself at his local police station and giving ‘an alternate statement of events’.

Initially, Wesley – who is three-year-old Sherin’s adoptive father – told police that he sent Sherin outside as punishment for not drinking her milk. It was around 3am in the morning, and Sherin was alone.

When Wesley went outside to check on Sherin 15 minutes later, there was no sign of her. When he reported Sherin’s absence to the police, she had been missing for five hours.

A wide-scale search was launched shortly after, and Wesley was initially arrested and charged with child endangerment.

It was Police Sergeant Kevin Perlich who shared the latest update – and said that more arrests and charges could follow. He could not, however, elaborate any further.

The news came just a day after a child’s body was found in the search for little Sherin, just a half-mile from the family home.

While the results of an autopsy are still pending, police said that the body is ‘most likely’ that of Sherin.

According to reports, Sherin’s mother, Sini, is ‘distraught’ by the revelations. Meanwhile, Sherin’s four-year-old sister has been taken into custody by social services.

We will keep you updated on the case as more information emerges.
