Being pregnant is not like it is in the movies – there is no light glowing around you, you don’t get to wear long, white flowing dresses and you most certainly don’t get to put your feet up as often as you like. In fact, when we really think about it, it is actually quite a hard, often scary, time, especially if it is your first.

Here are five of we think are the hardest things about being pregnant.

Your body’s changes
Your body is going through an awful lot of changes. Without having to mention your ever growing bump, your breasts will become enlarged and quite tender, your feet might swell, you’ll see varicose veins forming and you may notice your skin developing spots.

Dealing with your hormones
During pregnancy, your hormones are going to be all over the place. So much so that you are likely to cry, laugh and feel angry all in the same minute. These can be particularly tough to get to grips of and some mums-to-be can find them quite frustrating, especially when they happen to burst into tears at the most awkward time. It can make you feel out of control of your own body and is definitely up there at the top as being one of the hardest things about pregnancy.

The unknown
If it is your first pregnancy, you will find the unknown particularly hard to deal with. Each stage is different and every woman goes through different experiences making it vital you talk to your midwife and get information on what you should expect to happen.

Dealing with complications
Any form of complication during your pregnancy is hard to deal with whether it is mild or serious. Complications can include developing anaemia, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, preeclampsia or even placenta previa.

Choosing a name
Choosing your baby’s name has definitely got to be one of the hardest things about being pregnant. Unless you are lucky enough to have a family name, ensuring two people like one equally is really tough.Thankfully, you have nine months to get your thinking cap on.
