Teaching your teen how to drive is far from easy. As much as you want to encourage them to stay off the road, you can’t. Here are five realities you will have to face before allowing your teen to get behind the wheel.

Your car will get damaged
Think carefully before agreeing to let your teen have a test run of the family car because it will not be the same vehicle you had originally after the experience. Your teen may cause damage to your car because they’ve never actually driven one before. So you will have to get used to the sound of your clutch jamming and wheels scratching before things will actually run smoothly.

There will be tears
Many family fallouts have occurred as a result of driving lessons as it’s a frustrating experience for both parties. It can be a frightening one for your teen, an irritating one for you and both of you will probably say things you’ll regret later. Sometimes it’s necessary to insist on extra professional lessons; not only are professional instructors better at handling every scenario your teen will have to face, they also have an extra steering wheel and pedals. They can also give your teen some much needed confidence, which will only make driving lessons with your teen slightly more pleasurable.

It will be expensive
Professional driving lessons are necessary but they are also very expensive and that’s just the beginning when it comes to your teen's driving costs. Your teen’s insurance may also be extremely high.

They will develop an attitude
Eight driving lessons on and they think they know everything about driving and they will have no problem in constantly correcting you on your mistakes.

There will be plenty of failures
Very few teens pass their driving tests first time round and sometimes it’s better that they don’t. But it doesn’t stop the experience from being any less heart-breaking for your child, especially if they spent plenty of months practising. Prepare to give them lots of hugs and more importantly, encouragement.
