It’s hard being a mum in this modern society, where social media provides a platform for the entire world to criticise your choices.

This is something that US mum Katy Landrum has learned the hard way, after sharing the story of how she paid a professional to sleep train her three-month-old – while she enjoyed a weekend away.

Katy wrote about her experience in Redbook (you can read it here), describing the $30-an-hour payment to the professional as ‘the best money she ever spent’.

The idea was suggested by her sister, when she was struggling with her older child. When her son, Bo, came along, she and her husband knew that they were facing into another battle.

“As a self-employed realtor who works full-time, I regularly receive inquiries from clients looking to buy and sell homes, and I knew that in order to properly function, sleep was a necessity. Our daughter is now two-and-a-half, and she’s a great sleeper, so we knew we needed to do it again,” she wrote.

Rather than doing the training herself, however, Katy called on professional Deb as she ‘didn’t want to be in earshot of Bo’s weeping’.

Katy and her husband went off to a resort for the weekend while Deb moved in, and tried her best to stamp out any guilty thoughts that popped into her mind.

The result? It was a total success – and so worth it.

“When we got home the next day, Deb spent the night again to ensure Bo was on the right track. I woke up the next morning feeling refreshed – I hadn’t heard my son cry at all, and I slept straight through the night,” she revealed.

While Katy may be delighted with the results, the public have not been so kind about her choice. Indeed, once the story went live on Facebook, a number of parents came out to criticise her.

“These parents are cold and detached. I’d never abandon my babies to a stranger while I went on vacation or let them cry it out, or leave them for vacation while they cried,” wrote one parent.

Another chimed in: “If a woman doesn’t have time to be a parent…then she shouldn’t have kids.”

Well, what are your thoughts?
