When 33-year-old mum, Alina Roberts, passed away at the wheel of her car, her two-year-old son Benjamin climbed from the backseat of the vehicle to be closer to his mum and remained there until they were found by police almost 24 hours later.

The little boy was discovered after Alina's husband raised the alarm, concerned about the whereabouts of his family who had failed to return home from a day out at a farm.

Alina, who was pregnant with her second child, is understood to have fallen ill at the wheel of her car, approximately three miles from the family home.

Benjamin's devastated father has spoken out about the tragedy, saying: "It's completely devastating to know she won't be able to see Benjamin growing up and what should have been our bigger family."

Going on to explain the impact Alina's absence will have on him, the widower said: "I will miss living our lives together and sharing those experiences with her."

The couple, who had been married just nine months, had planned to take Benjamin to the farm together, but a change of plan meant Alina and Benjamin went alone.

Recalling the decision to stay at home, Mr. Roberts said: "I was supposed to go with them but at the last moment I said I would stay and do some tidying up. We had a kiss and a cuddle when they left. After about an hour, I sent her a text message asking if they were having fun."

Concerned that he had failed to elicit a response from his wife, Mr. Roberts recalled feeling anxious, saying: "Eventually, I went out in the car and drove the route I thought she would have taken but I couldn't find her."

Police have ruled out suspicious circumstances and do not believe Alina, who worked as a primary school teacher, committed suicide.

Alina and her son were discovered in a residential street in Derbyshire.
