The baby girl known as the “miracle of Gaza” for her delivery after her mother died in an Israeli airstrike, has reportedly passed away.

The baby girl, named Shimah, was delivered prematurely by emergency caesarean section after her 23–year-old mother died when an airstrike hit a house in the Gaza town of Deir al-Balah. Doctors had called the birth a “miracle” as the mother died 10 minutes before the operation could be completed.

Shimah’s death was reported by BBC journalist Ian Pannell, who had originally reported on the birth from Gaza. Pannell tweeted that the five-day-old baby had been buried next to her mum.

There has been speculation that the death was caused by the power outages that occurred when Israeli forces attacked Palestinian power plants, but the hospital has yet to confirm these rumours.
