Today our hearts are going out to the family of Elizabeth Perez; the courageous mother who lost her life yesterday while trying to save her toddler son.

According to reports, Ms Perez died after running back into a fire in her home in a desperate bid to rescue her two-year-old, Nathaniel. She was eight months pregnant with a daughter at the time.

The heartbreaking incident happened in Philadelphia, in the suburb of Fairhill, with the blaze breaking out at around 4am on Friday morning.

While Ms Perez initially escaped uninjured from the fire, she ran back into the burning building when she realised that little Nathanial had not made it out.

The pair were found by firefighters, holding each other in the doorway of a bedroom on the second floor, after being overwhelmed by smoke and flames.

Two other adults and four children were taken to hospital for treatment after the accident, and thankfully, all are said to now be stable.

An investigation into the devastating incident is now underway, and authorities believe that the fire may have been caused by a heater that ignited a blanket.

Firefighters attending the scene said that there were no working smoke alarms in the house at the time of the fire.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased at this very sad time.
