I can't believe it

A lot has been happening in our little corner of the world recently. We’ve had birthday celebrations, primary school acceptances and transitions from cot to bed. It’s all systems go, really.

But to be fair, when isn’t it?

To start with, I (for the first time) had to organise and arrange a ‘proper’ kids' birthday party – you know, the kind that involves booking a soft play area, hall and peeling thousands of hard boiled eggs for the obligatory egg and onion sarnies.

I genuinely thought I was going to have heart failure. I mean, I’ve organised little parties at home before, for three or four children. But this? This was for my daughter’s whole nursery class plus some extras and she was demanding a ‘My Little Pony’ theme.

But we managed it. Several hundred sausage rolls, four thousand metres of string for balloons and a gallon of purple glitter later, it was over. She had a ball.

I’m never doing it again.*

Then of course, there’s my little man. He’s coming on leaps and bounds – in both his movement and language skills. We’re starting to hear three and four word sentences; “Where Lala gone?” and “What happened, Daddy?” albeit in a lovely squishy toddler voice.

He’s got the freedom of the house now and is suitably rampaging around like the oncoming storm, bashing into things and (horror!) getting into my yarn stash and crochet bag and wrapping himself in brightly coloured wool.

“But,” I hear you say; “Is he sleeping yet?”

The dreaded question.

I’ve shared before in an earlier post what a horrific sleeper my son has always been. So recently we decided to move him from cot to bed, to see if it made an improvement. Well, we now no longer have him ending up in OUR bed which is a HUGE step forward.

He hasn’t been in with us in almost three months.

He’s now going to bed with a story and a little supper (I can’t believe it – he’s not a baby anymore) and he goes over like a lamb. But does he sleep all night?

Disappointingly...no.

He has, however got better.

Instead of 10pm wakings and trotting around the house like a hyperactive jumping bean, he now sometimes goes through to 5am which might seem a crazy hour to some people, but to us it’s literally a miracle. Those parents out there with poor sleepers will get it. Trust me.

So, life is a little calmer in our house – well at night time at least. So now, it’s time to start thinking about the summer and our next big transition – my daughter starting P1.

*starts crying uncontrollably*

Sorry. I actually can’t believe it. I really CAN’T believe it, (said every mother, ever). It is insane to think that I’m starting to buy uniforms, pencil cases and PE kits, going to meet new teachers and saying tearful goodbyes to nursery staff – don’t even get me started on her preschool graduation – the tears were EPIC.

I suppose I’m putting all this down in a blog post because at the moment, I’m really enjoying the age that both my children are.

I know that there will be other ages that will be equally delightful and lovely, but at the moment they are playing more together, exploring more and generally getting such excitement and simple pleasure out of life that they allow me to stop, slow down and just absorb the progress of their young lives with the wonder they deserve.

*until next year.
