It’s lonely being a stay-at-home mum

I’ve always considered myself very lucky to be a stay-at-home mum. While it is financially challenging at times, for us it made the best sense.

What I’ve found funny since becoming a stay-at-home mum is people’s perceptions. There are those that think we SAH mums keep coffee shops in business and others who think that it is such an easy job. For me and many others I know, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Besides minding the children and having my own daily chores to keep me busy, I’ve at times found being a stay-at-home mum quite lonely. This has become more apparent since our daughter was born last year.

When our son was born, I attended the local Mum and Baby group. It was great meeting up with other mums and I even had the odd cup of coffee with them! When it was just the two of us, I was able to get out more for long walks and it was easier to chat to people when I met them in the village. Now with two becoming three, these simple tasks are more difficult.

Trying to get two ready for a simple walk takes a lot more planning now. And when there are rain clouds threatening, it takes speed! I’ve become the ‘master’ planner when I need to get out of the house, whether it is to pick up some things or for sanity sake.

With no car, rainy days can make me feel like I’m in isolation! It is generally just me and my children until Daddy gets home so entertainment is key!

Being a stay-at-home mum brings daily challenges and as my children grow, so do those challenges. With all of my day being spent concentrating on them I forget about me sometimes. There is no coffee break anymore or a lunch hour; it’s grab it when you can and if you get five minutes to yourself, well done you!

While it can feel lonely at times, I really wouldn’t change it. I know I’m lucky and I see the benefits to them having me at home every day.

Soon my son will be starting preschool soon, which I’m quite looking forward to. This is not because he will be gone for a few hours but because I will have a social life during my day! I look forward to meeting other parents at the school as they drop off and pick up their children.

And while he is making new friends and learning lots of new things, myself and my daughter can go for those long walks and chats as I did with her brother.
