Dealing with the dreaded M-word

So let’s have a discussion about the midterm. Yes, the dreaded M-word: the bane of all our lives whether you are working or not.

Stay-at-home mums have to deal with kids disrupting a carefully organised schedule that has taken a long time to get right, while working mums have the horror of trying to figure out the logistics of who is going to mind the kids while they are at work.

And the fact that it comes around at the same time every year doesn’t mean we are better prepared for it - well not me anyway (I've given up on ever being an organised mum).

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not against the midterm, no way - the kids definitely need it. But being a working mum, there is definitely a lot of jigging and re-jigging in terms of childcare and getting them to minders in the morning that causes you to want to pull your hair out.

But it’s needed. Oh boy, it’s needed. Speaking from personal experience, my little one is definitely better after a few days off. Early mornings, long days at school, after-school activities and homework thrown on top of it all can be hard on our youngsters. And a few days where they can just be kids is always going to outweigh the negatives of our tricky childcare issues.

But the midterm is tough on us mums. Trying to keep them stimulated and entertained without spending a fortune is tough. Dealing with the incessant ‘I’m hungry’ or ‘I’m bored’ whines is tough. And trying to get them to do something productive with their time off and not just lounge in front of the TV is tough. Really, really tough.

I shouldn’t complain too much though, my little one only has two days off – it’s the Easter holidays I’m truly dreading.
