Week 26: A big scare with Baby One

I'm discovering that life when expecting triplets is a roller coaster.

We had our worries with one of the babies having too much fluid behind its neck earlier in the pregnancy, but after that resolved itself, I seemed to be taking it all in my stride. However, the last two weeks have certainly felt like I'm stuck on a some scary theme park ride.

Week 24 and I am told Baby One and Two are not growing as much as they should and I am being signed off work. Then Week 25 showed signs of resistance of the blood flow through the umbilical cord for both of them and now here we are at Week 26 and although Baby Two has picked up a bit, Baby One has dropped off the growth scale and is not doing great.

I was scanned on Wednesday and the consultant was a bit worried so she asked me to come back on Friday and to pack a bag! So I went home, rested as much as possible and came back for the scan. It wasn't good news - Baby One now has absent flow which means the blood flows and then stops for a second, then starts, then stops, etc.

So here I am, admitted to The Coombe at 26 weeks and two days and this is where I will stay until I am C-sectioned.

My husband was with me today, which was a complete blessing as it was all a lot to take in: being admitted, being told that our babies could be delivered any time from now and that the chance of survival increases from 50:50 at 25 weeks to 95% at 28/29 weeks.

The Neonatal Consultant has spoken to us about what to expect for a C-section and for the babies on their arrival. The nurses here are really lovely and have told me to just "lie there and grow those babies".

So now we need lots of prayers that they manage to stay in a bit longer and that when they have to be delivered they are three little fighters.
