Paul Doherty and his wife Georgina were excited when she began to experience labour pains at home last Saturday afternoon.

Having three older children, they thought they knew the drill.

However, they didn't count on the baby arriving en route to hospital.

The couple were making their way from Donegal to Altnagelvin hospital in Derry, according to The Irish Independent.

Just a few minutes into the drive, they were forced to stop by the side of the road to deliver the baby.

Paul helped deliver the baby safely and managed to tie the cord with his shoelace!

He then wrapped the little girl up in a coat to keep her warm and called an ambulance.

Georgina praised her husband's quick thinking, saying: "Paul was very relaxed about it all. I suppose he had no choice really and she came so quickly in the end.”

The couple called an ambulance and finally made it to hospital with new baby Saphia.

The little girl was no worse for wear despite her unusual arrival, and mum and baby were discharged from hospital the next day.

Georgina said her older children were delighted: "They all think it’s great that they have a new sister and that she arrived so quickly."

"Myself and Paul are just relieved that Saphia is healthy."
