Is my nursery safe?

We all want our baby’s nursery to be a sweet and pleasant enviroment. Pretty colours, lovely furniture and nice lighting will make it a much nice place for baby (and mummy) to spend time in. But we must also make sure that it’s safe for baby. There are a number of steps you can take to ensure that your baby’s nursery is safe.
  • Make sure that painting and wallpapering is finished at least 8 weeks before your baby will be staying in the nursery. Leave windows open to air out the room until your little one arrives. There are harmful fumes in these materials and so finishing this decorating in plenty of time will eliminate risks to your baby.
  • Take note of where the light hits the room and make sure not to place the crib where it will be hit by direct sunlight in the morning.
  • Do not put comforters and pillows into the crib as they could suffocate the baby. If you have been given a pretty blanket as a gift then place it on a chair in the room until baby is old enough to use it.
  • If you can, opt for wooden floors rather than wall-to-wall carpet. Wooden floors are much easier to clean and are much more hygenic. Carpet can harbour a lot of dust which can induce allergys in a child.
  • If you have rugs in the room then secure them down with double sided tape. You wouldn’t like to slip while you have baby in your arms!
  • Keep all nappy supplies close to the changing table. That way you don’t have to move far when at changing time and won’t have to leave baby alone on the table.
  • Place furniture away from windows. Make sure you use window guards and cut off blind or curtain cords, or make sure they are out of reach from your child to prevent choking.
  • Make sure any heavy furniture is secured to the wall so it won’t fall if it is accidentally bumped.
