There have been a number of accidents in recent times which have highlighted the important of car safety around children, and this latest story is one of the more extreme cases we have heard.

A pregnant woman and her child were reportedly run over by an electric car which was started up by a six-year-old boy in Beijing.

The shocking incident occurred at a car exhibition in a shopping centre in China’s capital, with the young child climbing into one of the display cars and ‘pretending’ to drive it.

However, the little boy somehow managed to start the car, driving it forward and knocking down the pregnant woman and the child she had with her in a pram.

Thankfully, neither mother nor baby were harmed, but police were still called to the scene to deal with the incident.

Police are now investigating how the cars, which were on display to the public, were open for people to sit into without adequate safety procedures in place.

An eyewitness told local media: “There were loads of kids messing around with the cars, even though it was in a roped off area…They moved the car back afterwards but you could still see kids playing with it, so I don’t think they treated the problem that seriously. At least not until the police turned up.”

What a shocking oversight. They are so lucky that no one was harmed.
