Our entrepreneurs are some of the most successful and creative in the world, so it only makes sense that our children would be well-versed in the skills required to take on the business world.

This is the argument of not-for-profit organisation BizWorld, which has called on the incoming Government to make enterprise education a pivotal part of primary-school teacher training programmes.

BizWorld delivers free enterprise workshops in primary schools throughout the Republic of Ireland, and they have already seen their teacher-training model garner much success in two of our teaching colleges.

Speaking today, at their annual BizFactor competition, the organisation’s CEO Fiona McKeon said: “Education plays a significant role in fostering a culture of entrepreneurship, yet business programmes are not traditionally offered at primary level.”

Moving on to her company’s ‘cost-effective’ proposal, Ms McKeon added: “Our idea is to establish an optional BizWorld ‘train the trainer’ module on all Bachelor in Education degree courses, and work with all primary-school teacher training institutions to ensure the delivery of at least one BizWorld workshop becomes a standard output of all teaching practice placements.”

Do you think this would be a good idea for our colleges and teachers going forward?
