We are all aware of the importance of a good breakfast, but according to a recently released poll more children are turning up at school “hungry and unable to concentrate”.

The poll of 900 UK teachers, found that over half of the respondents feel more kids than last year are arriving hungry, believing benefit cuts and the downturn have made it difficult for parents to put breakfast on the table. To help those struggling, three-in-ten admitted that they brought food in to the classroom for those who arrived hungry.

But it’s not just a lack of breakfast that is a problem. According to the NASUWT, not only are kids unable to concentrate, they are also turning up without school equipment, “hugging radiators” to keep warm and bringing in mouldy food for lunch.

In response to the upsetting findings, a government spokesperson said: "Children should not be going to school hungry, which is why this Government has done more than any other to prevent this from happening."

"We are already spending £1.1 million over two years to provide breakfast clubs in 184 schools to help children in these areas start the day with a nutritious meal, promote healthy and balanced eating habits, supporting academic attainment and save parents money.

"In addition, thanks to the introduction of universal infant free school meals, 1.5 million more infant pupils are also now eligible to receive a free, nutritious lunch – saving families up to £400 per year."
