Experts say it’s very important to get an early start when it comes to dental care and your little one. By starting as soon as those pearly whites make their first appearance, you’re ensuring your child’s teeth have the best possible start.

Your child should typically see a dentist roughly around the time they get their first tooth or at least before their first birthday. However, for a little person, the dentist’s surgery can be a scary place so it’s a good idea to get your child used to the idea first. The best way to do this is to take them along for your check-up – or even Daddy’s – so they can see there’s nothing to worry about.

Your child’s first trip to the dentist should be a comfortable and relaxed experience. The dentist will just want to check that everything looks healthy with their teeth and gums. They will also pay close attention for signs of baby bottle tooth decay, which is a common problem in infants and toddlers.

The dentist can give you some practical advice on how to avoid any future cavities. They will also suggest a schedule for future visits to the dentist, usually recommended every six months or so.

In the meantime, as a parent, you should make sure your little one has a well-balanced diet, with plenty of calcium, fruit and vegetables and well as using a protective toothpaste, such as Colgate's Maximum Cavity Protection for Kids.
