Ten people including five teenagers have died in a school bus crash, in California.

The crash occurred after a Fed Ex truck collided head on with the school bus, which was carrying up to a total of 50 teenagers.

30 students were seriously injured as a result of the crash but managed to escape the bus before it burst into flames.

Investigators are unsure as to why the accident occurred, as the truck was on the opposite side of the interstate, until the driver crossed a grass median, hit a vehicle and then went into the school bus.

But they now believe that he was avoiding a white car which was travelling in front of him.

17 year old, Jonathan Gutierrez who was on the bus when the crash occurred, said he managed to escape through a smashed window.

“When the impact hit, I flew from my seat to the seat in front of me and that caused the cut on my eyebrow. From there, I realized we were in a bad accident and the entire aisle was full of smoke, and that’s when students were trying to escape the tour bus.”

Two driver, five students and three chaperones are among the deceased.

The students were originally travelling to visit Humbolt State University.
